The challenge
Payment declines are not binary events — they exist on a spectrum from hard declines (stolen card, account closed) to soft declines (insufficient funds, processor timeout, issuer busy signal). Hard declines are terminal. Soft declines are often retryable — but most platforms lack the infrastructure to retry intelligently, leaving significant revenue on the table.
Our analysis of 18 months of decline data across our operator network found that 52% of declined transactions were soft declines potentially recoverable through a timely retry via an alternative payment processor.
How it works
Smart Cascade intercepts soft-declined transactions and automatically retries them through a ranked list of backup PSPs. The routing logic considers the decline reason code, the transaction characteristics (amount, currency, card BIN), the historical performance of each PSP for similar transactions, and the current PSP health status.
